The Gainsborough Guide

Ahead of the launch of our new development, we thought we’d share a quick guide to Gainsborough for those not familiar with the area.

Gainsborough is a town in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated 18 miles north-west from the city and county town of Lincoln, on the River Trent. There is plenty to keep you occupied in Gainsborough, from viewing the Gainsborough Old Hall to visiting the Gainsborough Model Railway Society and shopping and dining out. Gainsborough also has a large choice when it comes to schools.

Tourist attractions

Gainsborough Old Hall is a unique medieval manor house – one of the best-preserved in England. Rich, flamboyant, Sir Thomas Burgh built it between 1460 and 1480 and it remains much as he left it, to the delight of thousands of visitors each year.

Gainsborough is also home to a fantastic golf course with two finely presented 18 hole courses, stunning Clubhouse Facilities, 12 Bay Floodlit Driving Range and on site apartments to sleep maximum eight.

Shopping and dining out

If you are more interested in shopping and eating, Gainsborough’s large variety of cafés, restaurants pubs and shops will not disappoint.

Marshall’s Yard is a fantastic shopping centre with around 27 shops and restaurants. The main high street is a shopaholic’s dream with a large selection of shops including high street chains, local stores and boutiques.

Transport

Gainsborough is served by a good rail network, with the main Gainsborough Central station linking through to Retford, Sheffield, Doncaster, Lincoln and Grimsby.

Gainsborough sits on the A156 and is very close to the A631, giving you easy access to the A15, A57 and the A1; allowing you to travel to the major cities with great ease.

The Robin Hood airport is only 17 miles away, which would take you around 30 minutes to drive to giving you the options to fly to many different locations with great ease.

Education

The town proudly has one of the top state schools in the country, Queen Elizabeth’s High School, and also the Trent Valley Academy, which opened in a £25 million new building in September 2009.

The town also has links with various neighbouring sixth form colleges including John Leggott Sixth Form College in Scunthorpe, North Lindsey College, and Lincoln College.

The University of Lincoln is located in the city centre, offering the students a fantastic city life with high quality education.
